About The Water's Edge Country Club

Established in 1988, The Water's Edge Country Club is a private, 18-hole PGA Championship golf course designed by R.F. Loving, Jr. With 13.5 miles of the Smith Mountain Lake shoreline in Penhook, Virginia, The Water's Edge offers unparalleled lake and mountain views, including golf course visibility from Smith Mountain Lake on 15 holes. Beyond its 36,000 square foot clubhouse, members of all ages can enjoy a variety of amenities such as golf, tennis, swimming, fitness, boating, fishing and horseback riding.

McConnell Golf Today

Under the direction of John McConnell as CEO, McConnell Golf, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year is the region’s largest owner of premier private clubs with a portfolio featuring 15 18-hole golf courses throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. McConnell Golf also leases and provides management services to Raleigh Golf Association (RGA) which is a 27-hole public course. In the fall of 2022, McConnell Golf signed a long-term management agreement with Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech, expanding its portfolio of courses into the Mid-Atlantic region. Most recently, McConnell Golf acquired Wilson Country Club which opened in 1915, featuring a Willard Byrd-designed golf course that was renovated by John LaFoy in 2005.
